Multipoint lock repair or replacement: how to decide
A multipoint lock can secure a door at several points along the edge, but one stiff handle or binding key can make the entire system feel broken. The right repair depends on what is actually failing: the door alignment, the cylinder, the centre gearbox, the locking strip, or one of the hooks, rollers or bolts.
Signs a repair or adjustment may be enough
- The key works with the door open but binds when the door is closed.
- The handle feels stiff because the door has dropped or the keeps have shifted.
- A loose handle, cylinder, hinge or strike is causing the mechanism to sit out of line.
- Only one locking point is not reaching its keep while the rest of the strip is intact.
In these cases, a careful alignment, keep adjustment, cylinder service or replacement of a small component may restore the original lock. Avoid forcing the handle or key; extra pressure can damage a gearbox that might otherwise have been serviceable.
When replacement is the better option
Replacement is more likely when the centre gearbox is cracked or grinding, the locking strip is bent, parts are badly worn, or the original mechanism is discontinued. A compatible replacement does not always have to be the same brand. What to send before service
Send a photo of the full door, the edge strip with the door open, the handle and cylinder, plus any brand or stamped number.
